Limbic is the first AI-led mental healthcare company selected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its Technology-Enabled Meaningful Patient Outcomes (TEMPO) pilot. Through the pilot, Limbic will introduce Unpacked, a clinician-supervised AI-led mental health service for eligible Medicare beneficiaries with clinically significant depression or anxiety. The service will deliver cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) through scheduled telephone conversations with an AI voice agent, overseen by licensed clinicians supervising each patient’s care from beginning to end.

The first real-world study on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in mental health treatment within a live, multi-site clinical setting has been published in JMIR Publications. The research found that patients receiving care augmented by GenAI attended 42% more therapy sessions and achieved a 25% higher recovery rate compared to standard treatment. These findings demonstrate GenAI’s ability to enhance clinical outcomes and elevate the standard of care within an established healthcare system—the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

This is a profound response to research earlier this year showing that UK mental healthcare services are not meeting the needs of people from ethnically diverse groups, including within NHS’ Talking Therapies services, a problem existing in the US, as well.

In a first-of-its-kind peer-reviewed study published by JMIR Publications, a team of U.K. researchers led by Max Rollwage Ph.D. has demonstrated significant clinical efficiencies and patient recovery rates by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the treatment of mental health. The study focused on data from nine NHS Talking Therapies services across England, involving 64,862 patients, and sought to determine whether AI-driven solutions could empower mental health practitioners to use their time more effectively while enhancing patient care.
